鋼邊止水帶是以可伸縮的橡膠和鍍鋅鋼帶所組成的復合件。鋼邊止水帶主要靠中間的橡膠段在混凝土變形縫間被壓縮或拉伸，而起到密封止水作用。一般來說，混凝土和橡膠的粘附力較差，在常規施工中，又因橡膠是柔軟彈性體，使混凝土在澆筑時不易被掏實，故在混凝土接縫膨脹，扯離、扭轉時會經常出現橡膠止水帶松動和脫落，以致在水頭壓力較高情況下會產生滲漏現象。
